Franz Josef Glacier

Apart from being renowned for its geological features, Franz Josef Glacier has always catered to travellers and is fondly referred to as the Travellers Rest'. Travelling north or south Franz Josef lends it's to be, the ideal spot to break your journey. Accommodation within the Township is abundant in the winter season May to September, but is very sparse during the peak season from October to May it is a good idea to book ahead during the peak season.

There is a wide variety of Accommodation facilities to suit most budgets and as with most Townships the Hotels, Motels and Backpacker accommodation is nestled within the confines of the town. The Lodges Bed and Breakfasts tend to be in the surrounding rural areas, Franz Josef is unique in that there are several small boutique camping grounds and campervan parks within the Township.

Franz Josef Glacier is also unique in that travelling from north or south, it is shrouded by native rainforest, though in the distance you can view the awesome ice capped vistas of the southern ranges and see glimpses of the Glacial carved valleys.
