About Eco Cruises

In 2006, Kathy and Ian Hartshorne saw the unique potential for a guided cruise on Lake Mapourika. Their vision was to provide a tour that could introduce anyone, of any age and fitness level to Glacier Country, even in the rain. At the time, only those who could kayak, or had their own vessel had access to the stunning views that can only be seen from out on the water.

In 2008, Glacier Country Lake Tours was established when the Hartshorne's purchased the Hanna K. She is an eight metre cruise boat that had been based at Huka Falls, in the North Island. They were also granted a Department of Conservation tourism concession, and gained the authorisation from the Maritime Safety Authority to operate their tour on Lake Mapourika. The relaxed 1 ½ hour cruise quickly became a Glacier Country highlight not to be missed.

Lake Mapourika is one of the West Coasts' best kept fishing secrets, and the Hanna K is also the perfect fishing vessel. In 2009, the Hartshorne's extended their Department of Conservation tourism concession to include charted fishing cruises. Charter cruises are extremely popular during the South Westland Lions 'Lake Mapourika Fishing Competition', held each year in February.
